Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios Celebrates 50 Years of Teaching since opening its first studio in Kaimuki in 1974. Since then, the ukulele academy has expanded to a total of four locations with the addition of Aiea, Kaneohe and Mililani, with thousands of students, ranging from keiki to adults, learning under the tutelage of master ukulele teacher Roy Sakuma and his wife Kathy along with their instructors all of whom are former students. Students who have become notable musicians include award-winning artists Jake Shimabukuro and Paula Fuga.

Roy Sakuma inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame - Roy Sakuma, Founder of the largest and longest running ukulele festival in the world was inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at the new International Ukulele Festival of Hawaii at Kapiolani Park. Roy Sakuma is honored for his continuous work for more than five decades promoting and perpetuating the ukulele throughout the world through the Ukulele Festival Hawaii, teaching thousands of students through the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios over 50 years, mentoring and developing ukulele musicians, charitable work and more. Roy Sakuma joins a celebrated list of inductees which includes Ohta San, Sam Kamaka Sr, Sam Kamaka Jr., Fred Kamaka Sr., Eddie Kamae, Lyle Ritz and more.
